Oh! The Places You Will Go!

I cannot believe it has been almost a year since posting on here! I guess I thought it was time to share again! Today, instead of writing contract proposals, I decided to paint a mural in the hallway of my office. I mean . . . Who doesn't do things like this in the middle of their work day!? As I was almost finished, I accidentally put my brush in the wrong color and painted without thinking. I was devastated! I had hand mixed the colors and there was not enough of the color to correct this. This was a huge mistake! I was not going to be able to fix this one.
Then all of a sudden, I realized there was nothing to fix! Everything was exactly how it was supposed to be. This scene is from Oh! The Places You Will Go! by Dr. Seuss. On the book cover, there is a very happy  little guy standing on top of the mountain. He had reached his destination! From his point of view, everything is perfect!
In reality, that's simply not true. We might feel like everything is perfect once we meet a goal. In actuality, the journey was probably everything but perfect. The journey can be messy and hard. Full of mistakes and tears. Wrong turns and detours. But it is the journey that makes up who we are as a person.
All of our paths, just like in my painting full of mistakes, touches the path of someone else. We get the chance to learn each time our path does this. Every time we make a mistake . . .  Every time the path gets a little messy . . . We grow and change and get one step closer to who we are today.
Sometimes we look back and wish we could cover up our mistakes so that no one could see them. Why? In a world full of photoshop and filters, we all feel the need to seem a little "better" than we are. Our flaws, our journeys, and our paths are what make us interesting, but we hide it in fear of being judged by those who surround us. All the while, everyone else is doing the same thing.
Today, I challenge you to step out with all of your flaws visible for everyone to see. Be the person you truly all. We are all broken and flawed, but together, we are a masterpiece.
I still have to do something with the background of the mural. It's not finished yet. Then again, neither is my journey!
